Violin by

Peter Baltzerson
Boston, c.1930

Born in Norway in 1876, Peter Baltzerson was initially an amateur violinmaker, building his first violin around 1897. He moved to the United States in 1906 and took a job working in the shop of luthier Ole Bryant in Boston, Massachusetts. Baltzerson must have demonstrated considerable skill in order to get a position in Bryant’s workshop, which was highly regarded and provided service to members of the Boston Symphony.

Balzterson set out on his own and established his own workshop around 1920. Typically basing his work on the models of Stradivari, Baltzerson made over 200 violins (and a handful of violas and cellos) before his death in 1938. His instruments are recognized today for their consistent craftsmanship and excellent tone, comparing favorable to those by Baltzerson’s European contemporaries. We have sold quite a few violins by Baltzerson, and we consider him to be one of the very best makers of the Boston school. This Stradivari-form violin from c. 1930 carries a robust and powerful sound.
