Violin by
Paul Knorr
Markneukirchen, 1926
For centuries, the city of Markneukirchen has been known as the center of violinmaking in Germany. Its importance was never greater than from the time of the Industrial Revolution of the late 1800s up through the second World War. Paul Knorr was born in Markneukirchen in 1882 and trained as a violinmaker with both his father, Albert, and Max Dölling. He worked for Heinrich Gütter in Breslau (now Wroclaw, Poland), and for Robert Beyer in Berlin, before returning to Markneukirchen and opening his own workshop in 1921.
Paul Knorr is recognized as one of the finest violinmakers of prewar Germany. He accurately followed traditional Cremonese models and used very fine materials and varnish for his instruments. Quite a few of his instruments came to the United States via import by the F. & R. Enders firm.
This violin offers the player a powerful, rich sound in an instrument in mint condition. Built on a Stradivari model and covered with a vibrant red varnish antiqued in Knorr’s traditional style, it will make an outstanding musical companion for the advancing or professional musician.
